Group riding is a social activity. It is not difficult, but it is a little different from riding on your own. We want all our members to enjoy riding with us and to be safe doing so. These notes tell you how we operate and are for existing members as well as new riders and those joining us from other Chapters.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

Preparing For The Ride<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text]Before you ride with Lindum Colonia you should be familiar with these notes. <\/span><\/span>The departure point will have been advertised on the Chapter<\/span> web site<\/span> for some time before the ride<\/span>, with <\/span>reminders on Facebook<\/span>.<\/span> You might want to print out the informat<\/span>ion given and the map if one has been supplied. <\/span><\/span>Meeting is usually<\/span> half an hour before the advertised departure time. <\/span><\/span>The Pre<\/span>–<\/span>Ride Safety Briefing<\/span> is given<\/span> 15 minutes<\/span> before the advertised departure time<\/span>. As this briefing is<\/span> essential <\/span>for all riders in the<\/span> group, missing the briefing may<\/span> delay the start of the ride<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Always arrive with a full tank and<\/span> an<\/span> empty bladder<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Please bear in mind that a<\/span> Ride<\/span>–<\/span>Out<\/span> is not the time to bring an inexperienced passenger or carry a pillion yourself for <\/span>the first time.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Signing In<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/span>Both you and your pillion must sign in to the ride. Anyone on the ride (including pillions) who is not a Lindum <\/span>Colonia member must sign the<\/span> Gu<\/span>est and\/or Child<\/span> Release form.<\/span><\/span>
By signing in you will acknowledge that you are deemed to be in control of, and responsible for, your vehicle and <\/span>your riding at all times<\/span>,<\/span> irrespective of any guidance or instructions from any member of the road crew and tha<\/span>t you <\/span>must at all times ride within the law and obey road traffic regulations. <\/span><\/span>Non<\/span>–<\/span>members should read the waiver form carefully before signing.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Road Crew<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/span><\/span>Each ride will h<\/span>ave a<\/span> Lead Road Captain<\/span>, a<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> (TEC)<\/span> and<\/span> usually<\/span> a Sweeper<\/span>.<\/span> These will be wearing <\/span>distinctive<\/span> orange and yellow<\/span> high<\/span>–<\/span>vis jackets. <\/span><\/span>The Lead Road Captain always rides at the front.<\/span> The Sweeper always rides last and<\/span> TEC<\/span> rides in front of the <\/span>Sweeper. <\/span><\/span>As the last<\/span> rider,<\/span> it is<\/span> the Sweeper\u2019s<\/span> job t<\/span>o stop and assist anyone<\/span> who needs<\/span> to drop out of the ride for whatever <\/span>reason.<\/span> If you<\/span> need<\/span> to stop,<\/span> do so in a safe place and then<\/span> remember to flag down the Sweeper<\/span> \u2013<\/span> otherwise he may <\/span>not know you are part of the ride and you could well get left behind!<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Pre-Ride Safety Briefing<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Lead Road Captain has overall responsibility for the ride and will give a short briefing before the start. <\/span><\/span>The Pre<\/span>–<\/span>Ride Safety Briefing<\/span> is given<\/span> 15 minutes<\/span> before the advertised departure time. As this briefing is essential <\/span>for all riders in the group,<\/span> missing the briefing may delay the start of the ride. <\/span><\/span>The Lead Road Captain will introduce<\/span> themselves<\/span>,<\/span> the TEC<\/span> and the Sweeper, provide you<\/span> with<\/span> a reminder of what <\/span>has been advertised plus any other relevant information and<\/span> give a short safety<\/span> briefing<\/span>. If he gives out his mobile <\/span>number, make a note of it and ask him if he does not. If you are new to the Chapter, we suggest that you get to the departure point well before the ride is due to leave. Make yourself known to the Lead Road Captain and get to know some of the members. If you not sure about the second man drop off procedure (see below) please say so.<\/span><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Staggered Formation<\/h3><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]On straight<\/span>,<\/span> open sections of road, riders should aim to ride in a staggered formation (see picture).<\/span> There are tw<\/span>o <\/span>columns, the near<\/span>–<\/span>side (left) column and the off<\/span>–<\/span>side (right) column.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>The first rider in the group is the Lead Road Captain<\/span> who may ride in whatever <\/span>position in<\/span> he thinks<\/span> best. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The second rider in the group, the<\/span> S<\/span>econd<\/span> M<\/span>an<\/span>,<\/span> should ride<\/span> in the<\/span> near<\/span>–<\/span>side column. <\/span>T<\/span>his<\/span> is so that, when he is dropped off (see<\/span> S<\/span>econd<\/span> M<\/span>an<\/span> Drop<\/span>–<\/span>off below)<\/span> he does<\/span>
not have to cross the path of the third rider in the group. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The third rider<\/span> takes the<\/span> off<\/span>–<\/span>side<\/span> column<\/span> and so on. T<\/span>his<\/span> allows the Lead Road <\/span>Captain to have a<\/span> good view to the<\/span> rear<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> should ride in a central position, so that<\/span> the Lead Road Captain<\/span> can <\/span>clearly be seen<\/span> along the central gully between the other riders in the column. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If another vehicle(s) gets into the ride while we are staggered, t<\/span>he rider <\/span>immediately behind it should maintain his position in the column (i.e. near side or <\/span>off side). This stops all the other bikes behind him from having to swap sides. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not always possible or safe to travel in a staggered formation, e.g. on narr<\/span>ow <\/span>roads, when adopting the correct line for a bend, or when part<\/span> of the road surface <\/span>is in poor condition. In these<\/span> cases,<\/span> riders should move into single file and increase <\/span>the distance from the rider immediately in front to two seconds (more in adverse <\/span>co<\/span>nditions)<\/span>, however ensure that it is safe for you to<\/span> manoeuvre in this way before <\/span>doing so as you can hamper the rider behind<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When the group stops<\/span> at traffic lights, junctions etc.,<\/span> riders should close<\/span>–<\/span>up side by <\/span>side (unless t<\/span>his<\/span> is not possible or safe)<\/span> so that the group occupies the minimum <\/span>length of road<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>his<\/span> is especially beneficial in built<\/span>–<\/span>up areas in getting as<\/span> many <\/span>Harleys through a junction or traffic light<\/span>s<\/span> as quickly<\/span> as possible.<\/span> When the group <\/span>moves<\/span> off<\/span>, the bikes start moving in the<\/span> order they were in before the group <\/span>stopped.<\/span> Never<\/span> ride two abreast. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Keep your eyes peeled<\/span> –<\/span> g<\/span>roup riding is not a reason to abandon your usual observation techniques.<\/span> Al<\/span>wa<\/span>ys be alert <\/span>for hazards.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”2660″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline” border_color=”white” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” css=”.vc_custom_1689325270513{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 60px !important;}”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When<\/span> in staggered<\/span> formation:<\/span> –<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\u2022<\/span> If in the<\/span> near side<\/span> column,<\/span> do not forget to<\/span> watch out for things like drivers pulling out without looking, <\/span>doors on parked cars opening, children (and people generally<\/span>)<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> If in the<\/span> off<\/span>–<\/span>side<\/span> column, do not ride so far to the right that your bike goes over the white line<\/span> (remember <\/span>your<\/span> highway pegs)<\/span> and consider every oncoming vehicle as a hazard.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

The Two Second Rule<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css_animation=”zoomIn” css=”.vc_custom_1685974949461{margin-top: -20px !important;margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 25px !important;margin-left: 5px !important;border-bottom-width: 20px !important;background-color: rgba(221,0,0,0.53) !important;*background-color: rgb(221,0,0) !important;border-bottom-color: #dd0000 !important;border-bottom-style: none !important;}”]<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>T<\/span>his<\/span> is absolutely fundamental to the safety of the<\/span> Ride<\/span>–<\/span>Out<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685971295276{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]In staggered riding,<\/span> as a guide<\/span> you should be:<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> At least two seconds behind the rider<\/span> directly<\/span> in front<\/span> of you<\/span> (i.e. on your<\/span> side of the lane<\/span>)<\/span>; and<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> At least one second behind the rider<\/span> diagonally in front of you (i.e. on the other side of the lane)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When the group<\/span> is riding in<\/span> single file, you<\/span> should be at least two seconds behind the rider in front of you. <\/span><\/span>It<\/span> takes about two seconds to say<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Only a fool breaks the two second rule<\/span>\u201d<\/span>;<\/span> so,<\/span> it is easy to work out if you are too <\/span>close to the bike in front.<\/span><\/span>
These suggestions are the minimum. If you are<\/span> a new rider,<\/span> allow a bit more space. Y<\/span>ou should<\/span> also<\/span> allow<\/span> extra <\/span>space<\/span> when conditions require, for example on wet<\/span> roads<\/span> or poor road surfaces.<\/span> In wet<\/span> weather,<\/span> it is sensible to <\/span>allow double the space (i.e.<\/span> at least<\/span> four seconds instead of two).<\/span> Your ju<\/span>dgment is paramount on t<\/span>his<\/span> and you <\/span>should never ride too close to the bikes in front of you.<\/span><\/span>
Please bear in mind, however, that leaving an excessive<\/span> gap is also unwise. The ride leader finds it much more <\/span>difficult<\/span> \u2013<\/span> if not impossible<\/span> \u2013<\/span> to see the TEC in the distance, and the<\/span> risk<\/span> of losing<\/span> part<\/span> of the ride<\/span> increases.<\/span> Such <\/span>gaps usually result from a rider failing to match the speed of the riders in fr<\/span>ont<\/span>. Remember that w<\/span>e always ride <\/span>within the speed limit.<\/span> Riders who leave an excessive gap can expect to be advised by members of the<\/span> road crew <\/span>who will offer<\/span> friendly<\/span> advice and support<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
The second man should try to give the Lead Road Captain a little<\/span> more space, say a 2 to 4 second gap. Some road <\/span>captains like this when they are leading.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Second Man Drop Off<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685972227315{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]You will not always be able to see the Lead Road Captain and<\/span> so<\/span> we use the second<\/span> man<\/span> drop off procedure<\/span> at turn<\/span>–<\/span>offs or in other places where it<\/span> is necessary to indicate the correct route to following riders.<\/span> The procedure involves <\/span>one rider stopping in a safe position and pointing out the route to the rest of the group.<\/span><\/span>
As a general rule<\/span> when you get to a junction or a roundabout,<\/span> you should as<\/span>sume that if there is no drop<\/span> off<\/span> then<\/span> the <\/span>route is straight ahead<\/span>.<\/span> I<\/span>f \u201cstraight ahead\u201d is not entirely clear and the ride leader cannot see the tail end of the ride<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span>re should be a drop off. At roundabouts, this will normally be at the<\/span> exit of<\/span> the<\/span> ro<\/span>undabout.<\/span><\/span>
At a drop off point, the Lead Road Captain will raise<\/span> his<\/span> left<\/span> arm upwards and then point to the area for the second <\/span>man<\/span> to stop.<\/span> T<\/span>his<\/span> is<\/span> only<\/span> a guide and it is up to the person being dropped off to ensure they stop in a safe and legal <\/span>place.<\/span><\/span>
Be aware that the edges of the carriageway can be quite slippery<\/span> –<\/span> even on the tarmac surface.<\/span> A residue of sticky <\/span>muck often builds up and can form a lethal cocktail.<\/span> T<\/span>his<\/span> seems a particular hazard on trunk roads, including dual <\/span>carriageways, w<\/span>hich are not regularly cleaned.<\/span> On minor r<\/span>oads, the edge of the road can f<\/span>all away steeply to your <\/span>left, so check before you put your foot down.<\/span><\/span>
Having stopped safely,<\/span> turn off your<\/span> indicators<\/span> and<\/span> indicate the direction to go for the rest of the group<\/span> with<\/span> a bold <\/span>arm<\/span> movement<\/span>. DO NOT<\/strong> move off<\/span> until the Sweeper and<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> appear.<\/span> Even if this appears to be a very <\/span>long time, do not move off until they arrive.<\/span><\/span>
If it is safe to do so,<\/span> the Sweeper and<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> will<\/span> normally<\/span> slow and allow the<\/span> second<\/span> man<\/span> to re<\/span>–<\/span>join<\/span> the <\/span>group<\/span> in front of them.<\/span> However, t<\/span>his<\/span> is not always<\/span> safe.<\/span> In t<\/span>his<\/span> situation, the second<\/span> man<\/span> should<\/span> allow<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End <\/span>Charlie<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> Sweeper<\/span> to pass, then pull out behind them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

THE SECOND<\/span> MAN<\/span> MUST NOT PULL OUT IN FRONT OF THE SWEEPER AND<\/span> TAIL<\/span>–<\/span>END CHARLIE<\/span> UNLESS THEY ARE <\/span>CLEARLY GIVING WAY TO ENABLE HIM TO DO SO.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He should only move off when it is safe and then catch<\/span> the ride<\/span> up as and when<\/span> conditions permit. T<\/span>he Sweeper and <\/span>Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> w<\/span>ill<\/span> normally<\/span> slow down<\/span> to make overtaking eas<\/span>ier, and the second<\/span> man<\/span> takes<\/span> his<\/span> place immediately <\/span>in front of<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

When you are dropped off:<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> N<\/span>EVER leave before you see<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Keep your engine running so that you are ready to move off<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> ALWAYS cancel your indicator<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember t<\/span>hat<\/span> very occasionally<\/span> there may be new riders between<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> and the Sweeper. <\/span><\/span>Back at the front of the group the original third rider has now become second<\/span> man<\/span> and moves to the<\/span> near side<\/span> of the <\/span>lane.<\/span> Every<\/span>one else will then readjust their road position, working backwards from the front.<\/span> Remember the two<\/span>–<\/span>second rule and maintain a safe distance.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

If There Is A Trike On The Ride<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685972440444{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]If there is a<\/span> Trike<\/span> on the ride, the rider will not usually want to do second man drop off.<\/span> This also applies to a bike <\/span>with a side<\/span>–<\/span>car. <\/span><\/span>In this<\/span> situation,<\/span> t<\/span>he position of trikes in the group should be agreed prior to the start of the ride and the trike riders and road crew briefed. The option in use at the moment is for the trikes to ride behind the sweeper. At times when sight of the trikes is lost then the Tail end road crew will adopt the buddy system with the trikes.<\/p>\n

During large ride outs involving visiting riders, such as the Concursum, the trikes will ride in the group. They will however, start off just in front of the TEC so there should be no need to use them as drop offs.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text]

The \u201cAd Hoc\u201d Drop Off<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685972618640{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span>Sometimes the Lead Road Captain will make a mistake and not put a drop off down where he should have done. We <\/span>are all human and this is hopefully rare. If it is obvious to you that a d<\/span>rop off is needed, you may \u201cdrop yourself off\u201d <\/span>and indicate the route to those behind you. <\/span><\/span>Be careful.<\/span> While the rider behind you should be paying attention, he might not be expecting you to pull over.<\/span> Make <\/span>sure you signal and slow down carefully. <\/span><\/span>An<\/span>yone on the ride can help in this way but off duty members of the road crew should always be on the alert in case <\/span>an ad hoc drop off is needed. <\/span><\/span>Sometimes it may be sufficient for a rider in this situation to slow slightly, just enough so he can be seen by<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End <\/span>Charlie<\/span>. If<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> can see that the ride is turning, everything should be fine.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

If You Are Lost<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685972949086{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span><\/span>The best laid plans sometimes go<\/span> wrong,<\/span> and you may find yourself alone or among a group of riders who have <\/span>become separated from the main group and lost the route. What to do depends on the circumstances. The best <\/span>thing is normally to wait and see if<\/span> Tail<\/span>–<\/span>End Charlie<\/span> and the<\/span> S<\/span>weeper arrive.<\/span> They should know the route.<\/span> They <\/span>should also have the mobile number of the Lead Road Captain (and so should you). <\/span><\/span>If they do not arrive after about 15 minutes, you or the group will have to decide what to do, perhaps proceed to the <\/span>destination or abandon<\/span> the ride. If a map of the route was published and you are among the wise virgins who <\/span>printed this<\/span> out,<\/span> you will be in a much better position.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

The No Overtaking Rule<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973087184{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]G<\/span><\/span><\/span>roup riding is a social activity.<\/span> There is<\/span> NO OVERTAKING OF OTHER MEMBERS WITHIN THE G<\/span>ROUP<\/span>. <\/span><\/strong><\/span>However, overtaking of<\/span> other<\/span> vehicles is perfectly acceptable when it is safe and legal to do so.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Overtaking On Dual Carriageways \u2013 The Snake<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973267756{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span>T<\/span>his<\/span> section applies<\/span> where there are two or more lanes in the direction of travel. Normally the group w<\/span>ill<\/span> then be in <\/span>staggered formation.<\/span><\/span>
If the Lead Road Captain decides to<\/span> overtake<\/span> he will move into the lane to<\/span> his<\/span> right,<\/span> complete the overtake<\/span> and<\/span> then <\/span>normally pull back into the<\/span> left<\/span>–<\/span>hand<\/span> lan<\/span>e<\/span>.<\/span> He<\/span> must<\/span> then maintain overtaking speed until all riders have overtaken. <\/span>The riders behind will see t<\/span>his<\/span>. The correct procedure is that as each rider approaches the slower vehicle<\/span>(s)<\/span>, he will <\/span>move out to the right to pass and then pull back in i<\/span>f<\/span> the Lead Road C<\/span>aptain has pulled in.<\/span><\/span> Overtaking speed should <\/span>be maintained<\/span> by everyone<\/span> until all riders have completed the overtaking<\/span> man<\/span>oeuvre. <\/span><\/span>What should not happen is for the whole group<\/span>, or a single<\/span> well<\/span>–<\/span>intentioned<\/span> rider,<\/span> to pull out to the right as soon as <\/span>they s<\/span>ee the Lead Road Captain pull out. All t<\/span>his<\/span> does is<\/span> create a queue in the right lane and<\/span> i<\/span>rritate<\/span> car<\/span> drivers<\/span>, <\/span>encouraging<\/span> them<\/span> to overtake us on the<\/span> left<\/span>–<\/span>hand<\/span> side and then cut<\/span> us up when moving<\/span> to the<\/span> right<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
To put it another way, we pass the slower veh<\/span>icle a bit like a snake slithering round an obstacle. It is<\/span> quite elegant <\/span>when done well.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Signals<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973387733{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span>There are various special signals which are occasionally used in group riding, in addition to the normal use of <\/span>indicators, brake lights etc. These are<\/span> opti<\/span>onal,<\/span> but you should be aware of them.<\/span><\/span>
<\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Horses<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973475107{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span>We ride in a mainly rural area and horses may be frightened by motorcycles. Good practice when horses are on the <\/span>road is to roll<\/span>–<\/span>off the throttle, reduce speed \/ coast past; give the horse a wide berth.<\/span> Unless the group stops do not <\/span>stop your engine<\/span>\u2014<\/span>restarting while moving is dangerous. If the horse is agitated and the group stops, turn off your <\/span>motor and ensure that the horse can see your full face by whatever means appropriate for your helmet type<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

Accidents<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973686703{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]A<\/span>ccidents are thankfully rare but can happen. We have produced a separate document on what to do in an accident.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]
<\/div>

Breakdown Insurance<\/h3><\/div>[vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685973777757{margin-top: 10px !important;}”]<\/span>Break<\/span>downs are rare due to legendary Harley Davidson reliability.<\/span> However,<\/span> if someone breaks down we cannot <\/span>normally hold up the whole r<\/span>ide until their bike is fixed.<\/span><\/span>
You are strongly advised to take out breakdown insurance and make sure you have the contact n<\/span>umbers with you. <\/span>This may come with your insurance or you can buy HOG Assistance or some other form of cover.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text]

\u2022<\/span> Wear th<\/span>e right gear for the conditions<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> We do not formally ban alcohol on our rides<\/span>,<\/span> but we do not encourage it either<\/span> and if you are under the <\/span>influence you<\/span> will<\/span> be asked to leave the ride<\/span> for the safety<\/span> of other members<\/span><\/span>
